Going All-in With LinkedIn Creates a Culture of Learning at Onyx
SUCCESS STORY
Onyx has been using LinkedIn Recruiter since 2018 as its primary hiring tool. It built a robust employer branding page with LinkedIn Career Pages that generated significant inbound interest from job candidates, and LinkedIn was the favored recruiting platform for the company’s HR department. More than 40 percent of the company’s hires now come through LinkedIn channels.
The partnership was so successful that when Onyx wanted to institute a new career development program, it immediately turned to LinkedIn. The initiative would enhance its employees’ skills, accelerate their career development and improve performance company-wide.
THE CHALLENGE
Implement a skill development program that caters to a diverse, multinational workforce
Onyx, an enterprise software provider for businesses in the hospitality industry, employs a diverse workforce, with more than 350 software developers, managers and administrative staff in 21 countries across three different continents. Developing employees is a challenge given the wide range of skills and cultures in the organization, and career and skill advancement is vital to retaining employees.
The company was providing development resources to employees on an ad hoc basis, finding content upon request and providing it to the appropriate teams in the organization. But it wanted to create a more comprehensive learning and development program, one that had automated reporting and that was both technically sophisticated enough for its technology department, and expansive enough for the rest of its sprawling, international staff.
THE SOLUTION
Incorporate LinkedIn Learning and its globally accessible content into Onyx’s career development program
With more than 20,000 courses available in seven different languages, LinkedIn Learning was the perfect solution for Onyx’s diverse, multinational needs. The content is available in one comprehensive destination where employees can access and complete training modules anytime, from anywhere.
Onyx piloted LinkedIn Learning with managers, the company’s first formal management training program and hoped the pilot program would have a trickle-down effect within the organization. Senior employees would notice their managers exhibiting a commitment to honing their skills, even later in their careers, inspiring the senior-level employees to follow suit — and so on and so on, fostering a culture of growth and development, where employees are encouraged to acquire new skills and advance in their careers.
Shortly after the pilot program, middle- and associate-level employees began clamoring for access to LinkedIn Learning so they could obtain new skills and advance their careers. The program was so popular, in fact, that Onyx had to increase its number of licenses to accommodate all the interest. The result is a more talented, more motivated workforce that operates more efficiently and drives more revenue for the business.
Onyx is building on this new culture by showing employees how honing new skills can help them achieve new career milestones. LinkedIn Learning’s career development features, such as setting career goals and customized role guides for employees, match skill sets with specific roles in the organization. Employees can plot a trajectory for their career, and find the courses they need to complete to get there.

THE RESULTS
High Participation Rates
Participation in LinkedIn Learning was higher than the industry average in several categories. The company boasts a flawless, 100% activation rate, and two-thirds of participants are repeat learners, coming back to the platform regularly to complete courses.
Aligning Skills to Values
The three most-popular skills developed were Diversity & Inclusion, Allyship, and LGBTQ+ Community Support, and the two most popular courses were about Juneteenth and Pride Month. DEI is a core value for the organization, and LinkedIn Learning allowed Onyx to instill those values with an active training program, instead of just talking about them.
A Focus on Employee Career Development
Onyx plans to roll out the second phase of its LinkedIn Learning initiative this fall, when it will start connecting certain courses and skills in the platform to specific roles in the company. Employees can now see how skill development will open new opportunities within the organization. Onyx is on track to promote more internal employees to management positions, creating a stronger, more committed company culture.
“Learning and development is especially important for the new generation of job candidates, even more than salary in some cases. We want to show employees, ‘We invest in you.’ It’s something we take very seriously.”
